About CNLF

Our History

In July 2023, after decades of seeking justice for Celia through separate efforts, the descendants of Celia and Robert Newsom from across the country joined forces with Fulton, Missouri, community leaders, Celia art historians, history professors, and other dedicated supporters to form the Justice for Celia Coalition

The Coalition’s Celia Vindication Plan aimed to honor Celia through a range of initiatives, including post-conviction relief, the development of Celia-centered history education, memorials and art exhibits in Fulton and St. Louis, Missouri, the establishment of the Celia Newsom Legacy Foundation, and continued support for efforts to prevent rape, domestic violence, and human trafficking today.

On May 17, 2024, the Celia Newsom Legacy Foundation was formally launched to provide an enduring structure for advancing Celia's vindication. With its establishment, the Foundation officially replaced the Justice for Celia Coalition.

Our Mission and vision

The mission of the Celia Newsom Legacy Foundation (CNLF) is to educate, inspire, and advocate. By sharing Celia’s story of radical resistance to dehumanization, exploitation, and injustice, we hope to inspire others to:

  • Examine the world with greater insight

  • Advocate for and support efforts to prevent modern-day rape, domestic violence, and human trafficking.

While the CNLF succeeded in overturning Celia’s conviction and passing historic legislation in her name, our work is far from over. To advance our mission, we’ve organized our intentional goals into a five-point Vindication Plan which serves as the foundation for a living, multi-year strategic roadmap. This roadmap will evolve over time to reflect progress and respond to emerging opportunities.

We are proud to share that three of our five original goals have already been accomplished, and we are actively working to complete the remaining two:

  • Mature the Celia Newsom Legacy Foundation - IN PROGRESS

  • Place Celia Museum Exhibit at the Kingdom of Callaway Museum - COMPLETE

  • Erect Celia Monuments in Fulton, Missouri and at the Historic Greenwood Cemetery in St. Louis, Missouri - IN PROGRESS

  • Pass Celia Legislation in Missouri - COMPLETE

  • Secure a Pardon for Celia from the Missouri Governor - COMPLETE

Honoring A CELIA CHAMPION, Attorney Margaret Bush Wilson

Margaret Bush Wilson
01/31/1919 – 08/11/2009

Though you are no longer with us in body, your spirit, courage, and unwavering dedication to Celia continue to inspire and guide the work of the Celia Newsom Legacy Foundation.

Your tireless pursuit of justice and truth brought Celia’s story into the light and ensured that her voice, so long silenced, would echo through generations.

You did more than tell her story—you dignified her life, uncovered her lineage, gave her a face when her own was lost to history and made certain that her name would not be forgotten. Because of your devotion, we have a path forward to build upon, a legacy to uphold, and a powerful example of advocacy to emulate.

The Celia Newsom Legacy Foundation proudly stands on your shoulders. Thank you for showing us how to fight with grace, how to speak truth with courage, and how to honor our ancestors with action.

With enduring respect and gratitude,

Dear Attorney Margaret Bush Wilson,

The Celia Newsom Legacy Foundation

In her own words, Attorney Bush Wilson describes her Celia journey in the foreword she wrote for “The Face of Celia”, by Solomon Thurman, Jr.- the recap of his Celia portrait journey:

“Quite by chance, in 1940, I stumbled on an account of the fate of CELIA during my first year of law school. This account of a young slave girl, pregnant with her master's child, who killed him and was hanged in 1855 on the Courthouse steps in Fulton, Missouri, was haunting.

At the time, I remember saying to myself, "Nothing that happens to me can compare with what this teen-aged girl endured". That was the moment when she became my heroine, and she will continue to be to the end of my days. No picture of Celia has been found. But, in 1992, I commissioned Artist  Solomon Thurman to paint a  portrait of CELIA from his imagination and her life story.”
